Booshway's Report
2008 Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous
Henry's Fork in McKinnon, Wyoming
This recap report is for those of you who were at the 2008 Henry's Fork RMNR and for those of you unfortunate people who missed a truly great rendezvous.
The opening ceremonies on Saturday the 12th of July will go down in rendezvous history as one of the funniest thanks to the shenanigans of Oak Smith who became known as "MegaMouth", the human megaphone. Since most of us don't have a very loud voice or we were losing it due to talking too much, Oak used his voice (very loudly) to reiterate what we were trying to say. Ken Janson played and sang a lovely opening song he wrote especially for this rendezvous which he again played at closing ceremonies from repeated requests.
Several participants came to the rendezvous via horseback from different directions riding as far as 150 miles from Brown's Hole and closer from north of the Henry's Fork. A few highlights during the week included: the ladies' social; Highland Games; kids' games; a "way off Broadway" version of The Taming of the Shrew with apologies to Mr. Shakespeare; a variety of seminars; rowing contest between the Gentlemen's and Ladies' Rowing Clubs, alligator wrestling/riding (which the gator won), the Goodmans' renewal of their wedding vows, photo shoots at Ed Morgan's camp, rifle matches, archery, and knife and hawk throws. If anyone was bored it was their own fault.
Gremlins invaded camp by turning arrows around, putting up street name signs, turning camps inside out, decorating pine trees, and disturbing a flock of migrating flamingos.
For the statistic minded: we had 346 camps including 11 tin tipis and 34 day trippers. David Montoya of Bellevue, CO won the .54 caliber English Sporting rifle and Pat Lakin of Whiterocks, UT won the Ed Morgan original artwork. We raised almost $5,000 between the two raffles and an auction for two bags of very old lost and found stuff. Joe DeLaRonde also raffled off one of his spike hawks to raise funds to help Jon and Janice Bower. The hawk was won by Wiatt Williamson. Over all aggregate shooting match was won by Bruce Schwindt, second place to Squatting Hawk, and third place to Joe Kierst.
Mark Anderson, the land owner reported that he and his grandkids walked the site after we had left and all they found was 3 cans and 1 small piece of paper. He was pleased beyond words at the way we had left the campsite and said it was hard to tell that so many people had been there. Thanks to all of you who policed your campsite and put the fire pits back together.
Thanks to all the following people for their help: Darlene Wilcoxson and Lori Bice for all the long hours at the gate; Susy Epperson and Flint for the way they and all the Dog Soldiers handled the few problems that arose; Ken (Howdy) Davis our main medic who reported only three minor calls; Crystal Clark for purser duties; Marjorie Goodman for lining up the seminars and helping with the raffles; Conon Asmussen for running horse camp and for leaving it as beautiful as they found it; Ed Morgan for getting the parking lot organized and for donating his original artwork for the raffle; Tim Houseweart for heading up the Trade Committee and collecting donations for the raffle (a special thanks to all traders and individuals who donated items for the raffle); David Boender for putting on some good shooting matches with the help of Doc White (they had over 120 shooters); Glen (Timberline) Quick with Rawhide's help for the knife and hawk activities; Charlie Acuna for the archery; Pam Weible for taking care of the kids games; and Skinner who, with his team of mules made life at rendezvous more comfortable and picturesque.
In addition to the above "official staff" we want to acknowledge the following people for all the work and long hours they put in to make the 2008 rendezvous a success. These folks cleared roads and campsites, covered hooters, dug post holes for targets and flagpoles, raised canvas for the gate; put up the signs and in some cases made the signs, sold ice before the team arrived, cut firewood, and a whole lot more. In other words they sweated a bunch to make your rendezvous as pleasant as possible. These folks are: Wiatt Williamson, Travis and all the young'ns in their camp, (the "savages", Derek, Bart, Pete, et al), Neill (Oxbow) Fields, Jackie Kuhlman, Margaret Musick, Gloria Henry, Fran Davis, Shirley Gardiner, Harry Harpoon, Bob Woodall, Jean Pace, Bill McKelvie, Ed Wilde, Mike Pullen, Larry and Kathy Ring, Dave and Karen Krill, Danny Lytle for making the custom spurs given to Mr. Anderson, Scott Manning for the pig roast that fed the work crew one night, and Marlis DeLaRonde for doing all the advertising and website work. We could not have done this rendezvous as well without all the love and support you all have given us these past two years. For anyone who busted their butts and we failed to mention them, please accept our apologies.
Next time you meet with any of the aforementioned folks, give them a big thank you and hug for the great time you had on the Henry's Fork.
It was our pleasure to put this event together for your enjoyment.
